GETTING STARTED
Getting started "seeing someone" can be hard for people.  There are many questions.  Through the years I have come to know some of the concerns people have about "getting started."

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

It is, as you can imagine, hard to know from an informational telephone conversation how long it will take to meet the client's goals.  Many issues can be resolved satisfactorially in two or three visits.  Other clients will choose to have more visits.  I always tell clients, 10 visits is a lot.  It doesn't seem like many visits for complex problems, but things can go faster these days and, quite often, can be worked through in only a few visits.

DIDN'T THERAPY USED TO TAKE YEARS AND YEARS?

Apparently it did, most notably psychoanalysis.  However, there have been many new techniques and models presented in the field of psychology over the last many years.  But some of the old ideas are still tried and true.  For example, rapport with the client is still the foundation of any therapy.  One has to feel safe and cared for before one can begin the "gentle journey."

HOW CAN THERAPY BE SUCCESSFUL IN SUCH A SHORT TIME FOR SOME PEOPLE?

One of the newer ideas is for the therapist to be "more directive."  It is quite different from telling the client what to do, or "giving advice."  The foundation of it is a problem-solving approach where client and therapist work together to explore possibilities.  It is much like a client/consultant relationship.

The safeguard for getting the mental health care that one may need, however, is that psychologists and other therapists can suggest explorations at a deeper level, when the professional's opinion suggests it would be helpful and when the rapport is strong.  I call the rapport being "heart to heart."  Though things may be emotionally painful, it is a gentle journey when you are heart to heart with your guide.

I AM A LITTLE NERVOUS ABOUT BRINGING IN MY PARTNER OR SPOUSE, MY AGED PARENT...

That is understandable.  For those who wish to read further about my approaches and my services, please visit any of the following pages.  I have tried to share with the reader some of the initial concerns we may confront together and to let you know about my educational background for your consideration.

But the best way is probably to get an overview and then to call so we can discuss your particular needs.  If I feel I am not qualified to help you with your concerns, we will discuss other possible options.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE "NUTS AND BOLTS" OF YOUR PRACTICE?

I am available Monday through Friday.  We can schedule appointments in the morning or afternoon.

The telephone rings into my home when I am at home where I have my business office and is forwarded to my cell phone when I am at my clinical office on 620 or when I am out and about.  Therefore, there is only one telephone number to keep track of:

512- 261-6005

My office is handicapped accessible, and wheel chairs navigate easily.

I do look forward to hearing from you to discuss any further questions and concerns you may have.
